Registrations

Residency Requirements
 

Individuals may claim only one state or province as their legal residence.

  • Alien means a person who is not a citizen of the United States.
  • Non-resident means a citizen of the United States who does not fall within the definition of Alien or Resident.
  • Resident means a citizen of the U.S. who has been domiciled in Maine continuously during the 3 months next prior to the date on which the person applies for any license, or an alien who has been so domiciled for one year.

No person may be considered a resident if the person has not:

  1. if registered to vote, registered in Maine;
  2. if licensed to drive a motor vehicle, made application for a Maine motor vehicle license;
  3. if owning a motor vehicle or vehicles located within the State, registered each such vehicle in Maine;
  4. complied with State of Maine income tax laws; and
  5. if a full-time student at a Maine college or university, resides in Maine continuously for 3 months AND satisfies above requirements.

Motor Vehicle Registrations
 

New Registrations:

The new owner(s) of the vehicle will need to bring the following to the Town Office:

Maine Dealer Sale:

  • Bill of Sale.
  • Application for title for vehicles with a model year of 1995 and newer.
  • Proof of insurance for the vehicle being registered.
  • Proof Sales Tax has been paid.
  • Window Sticker for vehicles never previously sold.
  • Mileage.

Private Sale:

  • Complete Bill of Sale.
  • Title signed by buyer(s) and seller(s) for vehicles with a model year of 1995 and newer.
  • Release of Lien (if applicable).
  • Proof of Insurance for vehicle being registered.

New Registrations:

Motor vehicles renewals may be done at the Town Office or on-line at Rapid Renewal. Please have proof of insurance and mileage for the vehicle.


ATV Registrations

Maine no longer has reciprocity with any other state of country.

Maine Residents

New Registrations:

Dealer Sale:

The owner of a new ATV will need to bring the following to the Town Office:

  • Bill of sale.
  • Proof Sales Tax has been paid.

Private Sale:

  • Complete bill of sale.

Non-Residents

Dealer or Private Sale:

  • Complete bill of sale.
  • Non-residents are sales tax exempt.

If your ATV is currently registered in another state, please bring the current registration to the Town Office.

Re-Registrations:

Motor vehicles renewals may be done at the Town Office or on-line at Online ATV Registration. Please bring last years registration to the Town Office.


Boat Registrations

All motor boats and airmobiles used on the waters of Maine, with Maine as the State of principal use, must be registered in Maine. Maine reciprocally honors boat registrations form other states which have U.S. Coast Guard approved state boat registrations systems. Registration numbers must be displayed on all motorboats. Once a motorboat has been in Maine more than 60 consecutive days after the state of principal use has changed, it is subject to Maine registration requirements.

  • Bill of sale.
  • Proof Sales Tax has been paid.

Private Sale:

  • Complete bill of sale.

Non-Residents

Dealer Sale:

  • Complete bill of sale.
  • Proof Sales Tax has been paid.

Private Sale:

  • Complete bill of sale.

If your Boat is currently registered in another state, please bring the current registration to the Town Office.

Re-registrations:

Re-registrations can be done at the Town Office or on-line at Online Boat Registration. Please bring last years registration to the Town Office.


Snowmobile Registration


Maine Residents

New Registrations:

The owner of a new Snowmobile will need to bring the following to the Town Office:

Dealer Sale:

  • Bill of sale.
  • Proof Sales Tax has been paid.

Private Sale:

  • Complete bill of sale.

Non-Residents

There is no longer reciprocal privileges for snowmobile registrations.

Dealer Sale or Private Sale:

  • Complete bill of sale.
  • Non-resident snowmobiles are sales tax exempt.

If your Snowmobile is currently registered in another state, please bring in the current registration.

Re-registrations for Maine Residents and Non-Residents:

Re-registrations can be done at the Town Office or on-line at Online Snowmobile Registration. Please bring last years registration to the Town Office.
