Preliminary Flood Insurance Rate Maps

As part of the Federal Emergency Management Agency’s nationwide program to modernize Flood Insurance Rate Maps, new Preliminary Flood Insurance Rate Maps (FIRMs) and Flood Insurance Study (FIS) for York and Cumberland Counties were released on November 5, 2013, and are now available online. Additionally, there will be meetings with community officials and a 90-day comment/appeal period which is expected to take place over the late winter and early spring of 2014 to present and review the maps.

Property owners have the right to appeal FEMA’s findings concerning any changes to flood zones.

Flood hazard maps, also known as Digital Flood Insurance Rate Maps, indicate whether properties are in areas of high, moderate or low flood risk. Many property owners may find that their risk of flooding is higher or lower than they thought. If the risk level for a property changes, so may the requirement to carry flood insurance.
